Nobody at Tau has a roommate.

Twenty single bedrooms in a 1910 stone mansion the chapter owns. There is nothing else like it on this campus.

49 South College Drive sits on the quiet southeast corner of campus, a short walk from Fisher. It was built in 1910, designed by Lafayette-trained civil engineers who were themselves Zetes, and it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The chapter has owned it since it was built.

20

Single bedrooms

Every resident gets his own room with his own door. Each pair of bedrooms opens onto a shared suite room — somewhere to study or have four people over without going downstairs.

1910

On the National Register

Colonial Revival, stone, and in good repair. Air conditioned throughout, which most of the historic houses on this hill are not.

1857

Third fraternity at Lafayette

Tau has been here since 1857. The house was the social center of the campus and the city of Easton for a good part of that.

What's actually in it

The kitchen

A real chef who cooks real food, every day, in a house of this size. Ask anyone who has eaten at both — this is the best table on campus, and it is not close.

The dining room

Portraits on the wall. J. Mahlon Buck '21, of the Smith, Kline & French family (today's GlaxoSmithKline); his son owned a piece of the Phillies. Beside him, Allan Price Kirby — the brother whose family name ended up on half the buildings you walk past every day. Every brother should be able to tell you both stories on a tour.

TV room, piano, meeting spaces

Large common rooms that hold a crowd, and quiet ones that don't. A house built when people expected to entertain in it.

The social room

Downstairs, with the billiard table. Joe Maddon '76 painted “Try Not To Suck” on the wall down there — his line from the year he broke the Cubs' 108-year drought.

The veranda

Stone, covered, facing the quiet end of campus. It is the reason people end up staying after dinner in September and April.

Somewhere to work

Your own room with a door that closes, plus the suite rooms. If your GPA matters to you, this beats a double in a residence hall and it beats most off-campus arrangements.

What it costs

Written plainly, because the person reading this part is usually paying for it.

Over $1,000 less per semester

than most other Greek or college housing options — for a private room in a house none of them can match.

Heat, electricity, water, internet

Included

Security deposit

$500

Meals are separate

The house meal plan runs on its own arrangement, not the lease. Residents are expected to be on it.

One semester or two

You can take fall only, spring only, or the full year. Fall runs August 22 to December 17; spring runs January 23 to May 19.

A parent co-signs

The lease is a real lease with the chapter's alumni corporation as landlord, and a parent or guardian guarantees it.

Photographs only do so much. Come and eat dinner in it.

Tours run most weeks and we will feed you while you are here. No commitment, no pitch you have to sit through.
